OSI Group is one of the largest private companies in the United States. In 2016 Forbes ranked it No 58 with a sale of 6.1 billion US dollars. This achievement is incredible for a company that started in Chicago, Illinois in 1909. Kolschowsky, a German immigrant, started up a small butcher shop in the city. After the end of the Second World War, he expanded his small retail meat market to a wholesale business. The family business was rebranded to Otto & Sons in 1928.
The partnership between Ray Kroc and Otto & Sons would later prove to be a great success and a new revolution to the whole production and processing of meat. OSI Group acquires Baho Food. The two decades following the handshake saw a significant transformation as Otto & Sons who were just regular regional suppliers in Chicago became a global corporation now known as OSI Group in 1975. The McDonald restaurants were being established in every city-state all over the US, and this brought more pressure to Otto& Sons as they were one of the four main meat suppliers for the McDonalds. And indeed they stepped up to the challenge as they also expanded their operations to meet the high meat demand.
Otto & Sons invented a new processing technology that made their task even much easier and affordable. The flash freezing technology which involves quickly freezing food products using liquid nitrogen indeed was a significant breakthrough for the Otto & Sons. After Otto & Sons establishing themselves as OSI Group, they diversified their operations in two ways. One, they would remain a constant supplier and supply food products locally, and another advance their operations to the Midwest. Appointing Lavin as the new chairman and CEO, his experience in investment and banking expertise has proved crucial to the company’s growth. OSI has expanded its operations in Mexico, India, Austria, Brazil, Poland, Hungary among many other countries. OSI Group process and supply various food products such as cow beef, poultry meat, and sausage.
OSI is thoroughly committed to integrating its technology to ensure food security and maintain a collaborative partnership with the producers. OSI has also won many environmental awards, some of them include: British Globe of Honor (2016), California Green Business Award (2016), Environmental Recognition Award (2018) from NAMI (North America Meat Institute)

He was born and raised on a farm in Iowa, and went on to become a corporate president. David McDonald, the president of OSI Group, became interested in agriculture when he was a child. That interest carried over to his adult life when he enrolled at Iowa State University to study animal science.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in 1991, McDonald began work at OSI Industries in Chicago, which specializes in helping food service companies and retail food brands. He came up through the ranks to become OSI’s president, and was rewarded for his work and leadership with the Wallace E. Barron Outstanding Senior Award.
During his time with OSI Group, McDonald has expanded the company’s operations in China. They have opened eight factories in that country over the past few years, and in 2012, teamed with DOYOO Group to build a large processing plant in the Henan Province. McDonald also plans to make OSI Group the largest poultry product producer in China. Another frozen food processing plant and a modernized feed mill will open for business in India. Other such projects are planned in Switzerland and Hungary. In all, OSI has 65 facilities located in 17 different countries. Also under McDonald’s leadership, OSI has become the world leader in value added proteins.
Another achievement for McDonald during his tenure as president of OSI Group is the acquisition of Baho Food, which occurred in 2016. Baho was a Dutch based company that processed meat products. McDonald referred to it as a significant purchase that compliments OSI’s existing products, which will increase their demand by consumers. The company’s acquisitions did not stop there. OSI also bought a food processing warehouse and storage facility in Chicago formerly operated by Tyson Foods. Another OSI purchase involved Flagship Europe, an established UK based food service provider.

Do you know what a food supplier is? Do you know what custom food solutions are? The best answer for this question comes in the form of a company named OSI Group. If you can think of it, OSI can most likely create it and that’s the concept of a custom food solution. Headquartered in Aurora, Illinois, this company is the leader in custom food solutions, and it delivers on all promises. OSI Group has a solid reputation of excellence thanks to its long list of satisfied clients. Brands such as McDonald’s, KFC, Starbucks, Pizza Hut and Subway have done business with this gigantic food juggernaut.
Since the early 1900s, OSI Group has been providing some of the best tasting and freshest beef in the Midwest. Back in those days, OSI Group was actually known as Otto & Sons. Founded by German immigrant Otto Kolschowki, this family-owned and operated meat market brought in new dynamics to the industry. The dynamics were hard work, dedication and passion. No matter how small the company was at that time, it continued to persevere through the years. As of today, the company’s net worth is in the billions, but its services are priceless. Did you know that grocery stores, meat markets, restaurants and schools receive their food products from food suppliers? That’s right! What makes the food products different is the unique list of specific ingredients. Two or more retailors can sell the exact same food product while labelling the product with a completely different name.
The process can be a bit confusing, but this is how food supplying works. OSI Group is very progressive in its actions, and it does a lot of its business by acquiring other businesses. Flagship Europe, a premier European food supplier, was acquired by OSI Group in 2016. Flagship Europe provided top-notch dressings, sauces, marinades, pies and frozen poultry to a number of countries in that specific area. By merging with OSI, many more untouched areas can receive services thanks to OSI Group’s marketing machine. This only scratches the surface of what this company can and has done. Only the future will tell what comes next, but for right now, OSI Group is operating on all cylinders and that’s a fact.
